How I dealt with Travel Withdrawl

After spending six months travelling to a new country every weekend, coming home and getting back into a routine can be difficult. My first week home was exciting because I saw all the people I had been missing-- my mom, my brother, my sister and my friends. That first week I spent every minute of everyday with a different person, catching up and reliving my semester in Scotland.

And then real life happened.

I got a new job and got back into the routine of going to work everyday and coming home. I liked my new job, I made great friends and learned a lot, but I was left feeling like something was missing. That something being adventure.

Naturally, I started into a downward spiral of restlessness and boredom, until I realized I was the only thing in my way.

I made a choice to force myself to feel better.

I become a tourist in my own city and it was amazing.

Having lived in Calgary my whole life, I never appreciated all of the things it has to offer. I went up the Calgary Tower, explored Eau Claire, walked the little shops in Kensington, and of course, filled up on Iced Capps (I didn't have one for six months, it was awful).

I realized that just because I am not abroad anymore doesn't mean I can't pretend to be. I expected a lot from my time abroad, but I never expected to appreciate my home more because of it.

If you're feeling stuck in a rut, I would highly recommend taking the time to rediscover your home and remember why you fell in love with it in the first place.
