The Necropolis and Glasgow Cathedral

While in Glasgow last weekend we visited the Necropolis and the Glasgow Cathedral. We only saw the Cathedral from the outside but it was absolutely incredible. It is a medieval Cathedral, which began in 1197. The building itself is a masterpiece of original stone work and post-war stained glass. The Cathedral still has an active congregation and offers guided tours which I regret that we did not get to participate in.

The Necropolis is a cemetery that was established in 1832 and now stretches over 37 acres of land. It is open to the public to walk along the path and experience all of the monuments. We did not get to see the entire graveyard but what we did see was gorgeous and I would recommend visiting the Necropolis to anyone in Glasgow.

While walking we noticed that many of the tombstones featured a jug with a cloth draped over it, after some research I learned that this symbolizes immortality for those who have been cremated. The cloth is meant to protect the ashes and the jug represents the urn or vase that holds the ashes.

The monuments were incredible, all varying in size, colour and material. If you do get the chance to visit Glasgow the Necropolis and the Cathedral are both worth the visit.
