Dublin: "The more you eat, the more you can drink"

The above quote was told to my friend by a waiter at the first restaurant we went to in Dublin. Her plate was stacked full with food, it honestly would have been enough food to feed both of us, twice. This is pretty much how every meal in Dublin was.

Dublin is a very large city but it is interesting because all of the main attractions are in, or near, the city centre. The first day we went to the Wishing Hand monument, St. Mary's Cathedral, the Molly Malone Statue, the Spire and Trinity College.

I found the Molly Malone Statue very interesting because so many Irish pubs in Canada are named after her but there really is not much information on why that is. I have yet to find an answer as to who Molly Malone was and how she became such a well-known figure. The Spire is quite helpful because it is located in the centre of the main square and it is taller then most other buildings in Dublin so it is a good landmark.

Trinity College was incredible; the amount of details in the architecture is breathtaking. We chose to just walk around the outside instead of doing the student-led tour that they offer simply because we prefer doing things alone.

Our second day we did a tour of Christ Church Cathedral which is Dublin's medieval Cathedral. It cost 5.50euros to enter for students but it was well worth the money. It is easily the most beautiful church I have ever seen. The basement is a medieval crypt that is still well-preserved. It is also home to a mummified cat and rat, not the cutest creatures but definitely interesting.

The guided tour we did of the Dublin Castle was very informative and also worth the money. One thing to note about the castle is that the self-guided tour is cheaper but only allows you access to a portion of the castle, a guided tour allows you to see the whole castle.

Dublin was not at all what I was expecting, it was so much better. I don't know if it was the familiarity of being in a big city, the beautiful weather, the Guinness, or a combination of all three but all I can say is Dublin amazed me and I can't wait to go back one day.
